What is household hazardous waste (HHW)?
HHW is the hazardous material from a home — products that can catch fire, react, corrode, or poison people and waterways if they are landfilled or poured away.
Typical HHW
- Paint and paint-related products
- Motor oil and other automotive fluids from the home
- Household batteries and bulbs
- Cleaning chemicals, solvents and similar household chemicals
- Household chemicals you are told not to pour down a drain or put in trash
That list is a guide to the category, not a promise that a specific product will be taken on a specific day — confirm accepted items at CleanLA or LASAN before you go.
Where it goes in LA County
- One-day county HHW / e-waste events — weekly, usually Saturdays, free to LA County residents.
- City of Los Angeles S.A.F.E. Centers — generally Saturday–Sunday, 9am–3pm, with per-center exceptions.
- LA County permanent centers in Palmdale and Signal Hill — check the official schedule for hours.
Transport limit: 15 gallons or 125 lbs per trip.
Not accepted
Solar panels are not accepted at county HHW events or permanent centers. Pasadena’s own city e-waste / shredding days also do not include HHW — HHW needs a county event or a permanent center.
Never do this
- Never put HHW in curbside trash or a curbside bin.
- Never mix different chemicals together.
- Never pour oil, paint or chemicals into a storm drain.
